About Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge and Management Area

The Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge and Management Area is located in Perry and Crawford counties in southern Indiana. Established to protect the unique floodplain ecosystems associated with the Patoka River watershed, this refuge encompasses over 15,000 acres of bottomland forests, wetlands, and streams. Its diverse wetlands provide vital habitat for numerous waterfowl species, migratory birds, and a variety of mammals, amphibians, and fish species. The refuge’s landscape is shaped by the meandering Patoka River and its tributaries, creating a mosaic of floodplain wetlands, hardwood forests, and open marshes. Historically, this area was dominated by pristine forest and wetland habitats before agricultural development in the 20th century. Since its establishment in 1994, the refuge has focused on habitat restoration, water quality improvement, and species protection. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore a network of trails designed for bird watching, hiking, and nature photography, and enjoy kayaking opportunities along the Patoka River’s calm waters. Educational programs and guided tours are offered seasonally, allowing visitors to learn about the region’s ecology and conservation efforts. The refuge also plays a crucial role in preserving endangered and threatened species such as the Indiana bat and several migratory waterfowl. For visitors, the Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge presents a tranquil setting for observing rich biodiversity, experiencing quiet river paddles, and engaging with nature in a well-managed protected area.
