About Craggy Mountain Wilderness

 

Located within the Pisgah National Forest in western North Carolina, Craggy Mountain Wilderness protects approximately 13,590 acres of diverse Appalachian ecosystems. The landscape is characterized by steep, rocky ridges, dense hardwood forests, and unique crags and ledges that provide striking viewpoints. Elevations range from about 3,900 feet to over 5,700 feet at Craggy Dome, the highest point. This wilderness area preserves vital habitats for native plants and animals, including black bears, white-tailed deer, and several bird species. Established in 1984, Craggy Mountain Wilderness offers quiet solitude with over 14 miles of hiking trails, including parts of the famed Mountains-to-Sea Trail. Visitors are drawn to Craggy Pinnacle, a popular overlook featuring panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the city of Asheville beyond.
